Maata seems to have improved with shoulder surgery. Maybe I should go ad screw mine up and find out who his surgeon might be. Then I too can improve my skills.
Oh, and yes, by all means sign him sooner than later.

If Maatta can be extended this summer for $5 mil for 6 years, I'd do it in a second.
Bridge deals are only a good gamble for a team if there are legitimate questions about a players ceiling. Otherwise, they are just short sighted and end up costing more in the long run.

if the pens are healthy and try to move martin to a w. coast team at the deadline, who is the 4th top 4? despres is gonna have to get a heck of a lot more consistant, bortz ditto. harrington would have to play, ditto doumalin. then there is the poiliot wild card. |

I would have to say the shoulder surgery might have been a bit of an asset to Maatta. My younger brother had the same surgery, so I know of how the rehab goes... 1-2 months of "you can't do almost anything". After that, very very minimal shoulder usage for another 2 months. Why is that good? That leaves cardio and conditioning, and lots of time for it. And this is not a shot at Maatta, but he was not ready for a full NHL season last year. Not his fault, thats far from something easy for a pure rookie to do. This year I think he will be playing his best hockey at the end of the year as well as the start, no slow decline due to fatigue. |

This makes sense to me. I like the optimism and boy what's not to like about Maata? |

I had the same surgery as well. It was brutal, never want to deal with that again. I thought I was doing better at one point, unloaded the dishwasher and had my hand out at 90 degrees with 2 plates, completely collapsed and broke the plates. I was in so much pain. |

dunno. maatta would have one more cap increase under his belt by then and, if he plays lights out for a whole season, unlike last year, he will prove to be a legit top 3 or top 2 d-man. 5 mil might end up looking like a steal in a year or 2 |

When I saw the Brodin deal I also thought immediately of a comparable/framework deal for Matta. These teams playing hardball with the RFA's have not turned out well for the teams in my opinion. The Canadiens could have had PK at such a lower cap hit if they didn't negotiate so stiff.
I would offer Matta 5 mil X 6 years and pray he takes it. Pens get 2 years of his UFA and he gets a bit higher value for the first 2 years. Rutherford get on it!! |

Okay, well I've got one along the same alley in that case:
If they move Crosby and Malkin for picks at the TDL, who's the #1 center? |

come now, the one I raised was a perfectly reasnable question. martin is an asset that could be moved, would probably be out west, and my questions about replacing him were practical. no need for the sarcasm. |

Good news is that any contract extension for Maatta won't go into effect until the 16-17 season. That means hopefully 2 offseasons of the cap rising. |

Martin is in a contract year so the trade rumors have been flying. If the Pens pull in a top 6 winger for a top 4 D plus prospect\picks it would be Martin on the way out. |

Martin plus a lower pick/prospect to LA for Williams. Both UFAs at the end of the season. |

i see martin going for another ufa top 6... or a younger top 9 with potential. i think he has less value than many pens fans think, despite potentially being one of the best d options available at the deadline |
